Location, location, location.

Anyone will tell you that these are the three most important things in real estate. Well, this certainly holds true for cohousing. One of the most difficult tasks in creating a cohousing community is finding a suitable parcel of land. We will face this challenge as our group takes shape, and in Kennebunk, it is a great challenge.

We need to locate a parcel of land no smaller than about ten (10) or twelve (12) acres, in a suitable zoning district. Most important, the zoning must allow for "multi-family" dwellings, even though the houses in our cohousing community will be single family residences. This is because they will be close together on lots much smaller than those in traditional developments, or organized as condominiums, which eliminates the concept of individual lots.

We are looking for land in (or bordering) one of the following zoning districts (click here for the zoning ordinance):

      • Suburban Residential
      • Village Residential (VR and West Kennebunk VR)
      • Downtown Business
      • Upper Square
      • York Street Mixed Residential and Commercial Use
      • Lower Village Business
      • Suburban Commercial

If you own a parcel of ten or more acres in one of these districts, and would consider selling it to a not-for-profit group to develop a neighborhood for themselves, please

We are not some developer looking to build a bunch of big boxes with acres of lawn, we are Kennebunk residents (well, many of us are) who want to create a special place for fifteen to twenty families to call home, and which we believe will be an asset to the surrounding neighborhood and the town at large.
